You know that steel boned corsets are great for winnowing your waistline and boosting your self-esteem, but you probably never thought about the existence of a medical corset. A corset can’t necessarily cure diabetes or heart disease, unless, of course, it helps to motivate you to stick with a healthy diet and exercise program for weight loss.
That said, there are legitimate medical concerns that can be addressed with corsetry. How can you get the most out of your corsets by using them in a medial capacity? Here are just a few potential ways in which modern corsetry can help with medical problems.
Posture
Poor posture isn’t a medical problem, per se, but slumping can cause all kinds of medical issues over time. Back pain is the most notable symptom, although other common side effects could include headaches and even digestive disorders. Wearing a corset that helps to correct your posture, such as overbust and long-line models, could deliver positive results when dealing with these symptoms.
Corsets may also be useful in stabilizing the spine for those who have some type of unnatural curvature from medical disorders like scoliosis, lordosis, or kyphosis, for example. Some patients try steel boned corsets as a means of dealing with back pain related to these issues, but end up enjoying some correction of curvature along the way.
Back Pain
This is by far the most common medical complaint treated with a medical corset. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), approximately 31 million Americans will experience lower back pain at any given time, while an estimated 80% of adults will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.
Corsets may not be the first course of treatment most people try, but when you have chronic back pain due to poor posture, sitting at a desk all day, or an accident, just for example, you’ll probably try just about anything to alleviate the pain. Corsetry is a non-pharmaceutical alternative that appeals to many people. Plus, you’ll look great in the meantime.
Postpartum Recovery
Having a baby growing in your body can definitely push some parts out of place, notably your ribs and the muscles of your abdominal wall. Whether you’re suffering from diastasis recti or you simply feel a bit tender postpartum, wearing a corset can help to hold everything in place while you heal. Many women also find that wearing a corset during menstruation helps to ease cramps, which makes it something of a wonder garment for women at various stages of feminine function.
Compression Therapy
You know how you wrap your pup in a thunder blanket to keep him calm during storms? You might not realize it, but the same basic principle can be used to help you cope with anxiety. The compression offered by a corset can feel like a hug, helping to induce the feelings of calm that elude you when you’re working on a tight deadline at the office. Of course, if part of your anxiety centers on a fear of confinement, this might not be the right option, but for other forms of chronic anxiety, it’s definitely an avenue to explore.

My name is Rachel, I am the owner of Glamorous Corset, a small business founded by me in 2010. Back In 2005, I was in a car accident that left me with a herniated disk. Much to my surprise I learned steel boned corsets were beneficial to several medical injuries including mine. I was always intrigued with corsetry, their history and their beautiful aesthetic. I love sharing knowledge about corsets, educating my wonderful readers and breaking the negative stigma related to corsetry. In combination with my years of research and personal experience I hope my articles are useful and can help anyone who has struggled with some of the same things I have. More about me…
