If you’re going to spend the next several months or years using a waist trainer to slim down your midsection, you want to make sure your efforts pay off. This requires you to follow some guidelines for proper form. Here are a few nifty tips to ensure maximum results.
Start with the Right Corset
If a corset isn’t right for your body, you’re never going to get the waist training results you’re after. Just because it looks great online, on a mannequin, or on your best gal pal doesn’t mean it’s right for you!
There are corsets for the short and long of torso, for ladies that need a bust boost, and for those of us looking to corral a few extra pounds around the midsection. No matter your shape or size, there is likely a corset designed for your body type, so be realistic and get one that’s going to look and feel great.
Don’t forget to follow proper sizing guidelines, as well. Take accurate measurements before you buy so you know exactly what size to purchase, and don’t get cutesy with smaller sizing.
Yes, the goal is to train your waist to a smaller size, but wearing a corset that’s uncomfortably tight from the get-go is just asking for trouble. Remember that time you went on the cabbage soup diet and it lasted all of a week before you scarfed down a cheeseburger? Oh, gurrl, we all been there.
You know the sustainable diet is the right way to go, and the same principle applies to waist training. Start with the right size and proceed accordingly.
Proper Tightening
Learning to tighten your laces is the crux of wearing your waist trainer correctly. However you choose to tighten laces (with help, by hand, or with the aid of two doorknobs, for example), you need to make sure that the line of your laces is uniform and straight. If they’re tighter in the middle than on the ends, you’re going to warp boning, stress the fabric, and limit the overall effectiveness of your corset.
Seasoning
Much like you gradually add spices to your latest crockpot creation or you rub your cast iron skillet with oil, you need to take the time to break in, or season, a new corset. You can’t crank it up to eleven on the first day and expect positive results!
If you pull your corset too tight, you can not only damage the boning or busks, but you could also damage yourself. A too-tight corset can rub you the wrong way – LITERALLY! – causing redness, rawness, and even bruising. And if you bend the boning in the process, you’re bound to experience some major discomfort.
It’s not hard to learn how to wear a waist trainer correctly, but it does take a bit of trial and error (hopefully less of the latter). Over time, a seasoned corset will conform to your figure so that you can tighten until it fits like a snug, supportive body glove. Once you’re wearing it comfortably from dawn to dusk and your waist training schedule is underway, you’re going to see maximum results.

My name is Rachel, I am the owner of Glamorous Corset, a small business founded by me in 2010. Back In 2005, I was in a car accident that left me with a herniated disk. Much to my surprise I learned steel boned corsets were beneficial to several medical injuries including mine. I was always intrigued with corsetry, their history and their beautiful aesthetic. I love sharing knowledge about corsets, educating my wonderful readers and breaking the negative stigma related to corsetry. In combination with my years of research and personal experience I hope my articles are useful and can help anyone who has struggled with some of the same things I have. More about me…
