We could all use a little extra support in life, whether you could really use a hug when your world is falling apart, or you need someone to recognize that there’s a sink full of dishes and do them, so you have five minutes in your day to relax.
Women tend to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and somehow balance three full-time jobs (a career, raising kids, and running a household – oops, forgot about managing the social calendar and everyone’s emotional needs).
The last thing you need when your schedule is packed with obligations is an illness or injury slowing you down. Unfortunately, your back isn’t going to check in before it goes out, and frankly, your break-neck pace (so to speak) may have more than a little to do with acute or chronic back pain.
Whether you spend the majority of your day trying (mostly unsuccessfully) not to hunch over your keyboard, you decided to throw caution to the wind and attempt a scorpion handstand in yoga (with disastrous results), or you’re recovering from a car accident, you may need to slow down a bit.
While it’s always best to check in with your doctor when it comes to treating back pain, you might be surprised to discover that a corset could offer some needed support on a daily basis. Here are a few ways a corset may contribute to better back health and overall wellness while you recover.
Support a Healthy Posture
Most people don’t realize just how much they rely on core movements until they suffer a back injury.
Whether you’re sitting, standing, lying down, reaching, bending, twisting, or performing about a million other major or micro movements throughout the average day, a back injury can make each moment excruciating. Rest is typically a key component of recovery, but who has the time?!
Okay, we’re not advocating getting back in the saddle of life too soon after an injury, but if you want to increase comfort in general, you might consider trying on a steel-boned, waist training corset.
The rigid structure helps to keep your spine aligned and your torso supported, encouraging a healthy posture, whether you’re sitting at a desk all day or chasing kids around the house.
With the right garment for your body and your needs, a corset can provide targeted pressure that supports a healthy spine and engages abdominal muscles. Even better, as your core muscles adapt to daily wear, it’s likely that you’ll feel more comfortable maintaining better posture even when you’re not wearing your corset.
Take Pressure Off Compromised Structures
Whether you’re recovering from a back injury or you’re dealing with ongoing issues like chronic pain, a byproduct of your situation could be weakened or compromised structures that fail to heal, or suffer reinjury, due to lack of support.
In some cases, physical therapy, rehab, or other forms of treatment may be needed to correct the issues and prevent further injury.
However, you could also use a waist training corset, laced snugly but comfortably, to add needed support and reduce pressure on muscles, joints, discs, and nerve roots during the recovery process. You won’t realize how much it will help until you give it a try.
Reduce Motion that Could Delay Recovery
By the time you reach adulthood, you’ve probably become accustomed to enjoying a certain range of motion, which a back injury or pain can compromise. If you continue trying to move the way you’re used to, you may slow recovery and even reinjure yourself.
A corset can reduce your range of motion in specific ways – mainly related to twisting, bending, and rotation of the torso. It can also reduce micro-motions you might not even notice. This could help to impede movements that irritate or jar your healing back, potentially aiding in a speedy recovery while reducing discomfort.
Increase Warmth to Reduce Muscle Tension
Depending on the materials you choose, corsets can warm your core. It’s not quite the same as a heating pad, but the added warmth could help promote healthy blood flow that brings healing nutrients and oxygen to recovering tissues. Warmth can also help you relax and reduce muscle tension.
Give Yourself a Hug
Can a piece of clothing provide moral support? If any garment could pull it off, it would be a corset. This compression garment not only delivers a measure of physical support to your core, but many wearers describe donning a snug corset as feeling like being hugged.
This feeling may help with de-stressing and relaxation, which can only be beneficial when you’re trying to recover from a back injury or dealing with long-term pain.

My name is Rachel, I am the owner of Glamorous Corset, a small business founded by me in 2010. Back In 2005, I was in a car accident that left me with a herniated disk. Much to my surprise I learned steel boned corsets were beneficial to several medical injuries including mine. I was always intrigued with corsetry, their history and their beautiful aesthetic. I love sharing knowledge about corsets, educating my wonderful readers and breaking the negative stigma related to corsetry. In combination with my years of research and personal experience I hope my articles are useful and can help anyone who has struggled with some of the same things I have. More about me…
