Some women have a style that they develop and then stick to throughout their lifetime. Just look at celebs like Katherine Hepburn, Diane Keaton, and Coco Chanel – icons not only for their many accomplishments and public personas, but for their signature styles.

Then there are the fashion chameleons that make an artform of dressing. Madonna is one example, and having her finger on the pulse of fashion has led her to be a lifelong trendsetter. There are also people like Bjork who push fashion boundaries, but often miss the mark.

The point is that clothing is an expression of you – your personality and your preferences. It can be staid or whimsical, understated or outrageous. Best of all, you can have a lot of fun experimenting with your wardrobe without necessarily risking inclusion on worst-dressed lists. By pushing the envelope just a little, you can be the envy of all your friends, not to mention the resident trendsetter.

One great way to make the most of any wardrobe is to try pieces in new ways. Once upon a time, corsetry was meant to be the hidden foundation of a perfect figure. These days, undergarments are a lot more versatile. Can you wear your steel boned corset over clothing? The answer is yes! Of course, there may be a couple of caveats.

Keep it Classy

You may want to hide your corset under clothing as a functional garment (or for the eyes of your special someone only). Or you might be interested in branching out and incorporating shapewear into your everyday ensembles. For the latter, you want to make sure you don’t give off the wrong vibe.

Taking a lacy corset out of the bedroom is fine, but you should consider whether or not it’s appropriate for specific settings. A mesh corset paired with a bra and a blazer or moto jacket would probably be awesome for a club night with the girls, but you wouldn’t necessarily walk into your office on Monday morning wearing this getup.

Can corsets work in the office setting? Absolutely, when used appropriately. You might want to skip mesh, satin, or other textiles that could appear overly sexy. Instead, pair a cotton or leather waspie, other underbust corsets, or overbust options with a crisp Oxford top, a silky blouse, or even a dress as a way to expand your wardrobe and make an office-appropriate fashion statement.

Know Your Comfort Level

There are girls like Kim. K and Rihanna that are perfectly confident going out in public with little more than a bra top for torso coverage. Not everyone is so comfortable flashing their unmentionables.

If you just don’t feel comfortable wearing your corset outside clothing, it’s going to show. However, if you want to give it a try, think about pairing it with a basic tee and jeans, and maybe a blazer for a casual evening out. You could also add it to a plain dress instead of your typical belt for some extra pizzazz.

Wearing your corset outside clothing is optional and it depends entirely on your preference. However, it can be a great way to spice up your wardrobe while still gaining the waist training benefits of a steel boned corset.
